8-3 Cats back in polls
Wide receiver Eric Peterman's third quarter touchdown was the difference in Northwestern's 21-14 win over Michigan on Saturday.
After topping Michigan 21-14 at The Big House for the first time since 1995, Northwestern has moved back into rankings. The Wildcats are ranked No. 24 in the USA Today Coaches’ Poll.
In the AP Poll, NU received 44 votes and are ranked 27th. North Carolina, No. 25, received 115 votes, 71 more than the Cats.
NU has not won back-to-back games since beating Ohio and Iowa at the end of September. Since then, the Cats have followed a win-loss pattern to an 8-3 record and fourth place in the Big Ten. After each Big Ten win, NU has been ranked and after each loss, it has fallen out.
Penn State (No.8, Coaches’ Poll), Ohio State (No.10) and Michigan State (No. 15) are the only other teams ranked in either poll.
The BCS Standings will be released later today.
With the win over the Wolverines, the Cats guaranteed a trip to a Big Ten-affiliated bowl berth. It will be the teams’ first trip to a bowl game since 2005.
Next week, NU will take on Illinois (5-6, 3-4 Big Ten) for the Sweet Sioux Tomahawk Trophy at Ryan Field.
