Heisman Hopefuls: Big 12 beats each other up

The Big 12 seems to produce a new Heisman favorite every week. After Oklahoma’s stomping of Texas Tech, Sam Bradford is taking the top spot as Big 12 Heisman favorite over Michael Crabtree and Colt McCoy. But all these Big 12 players beating each other up and ruining each other’s Heisman chances might open the door for Tim Tebow to repeat as the winner or for late season favorite Shonn Greene of Iowa to sneak away with the trophy.

Sam Bradford

Sam Bradford
QB, Oklahoma

Last week: stepped up for the Sooners in a big way, passing for 304 yards and four touchdowns in a 65-21 win over No. 7 Texas Tech.
Next week: Nov. 29 at No. 11 Oklahoma State.
His chances: Bradford put himself back into the conversation comfortably with a huge primetime performance against the Red Raiders. Bradford has had the stats all season to win the Heisman, but lacked a defining win and defining performance to make him a leading candidate.

Tim Tebow
Quarterback, Florida

Last Week: did not need to do much against The Citadel in a 70-19 win. Tebow was 9 for 11 for 201 yards and threw three touchdowns.
Next Week: Nov. 29 at No. 23 Florida State.
His Chances: Last week’s game is a wash because of the opponent. Tebow has had some big performances this year, but none have been able to equal his overall performance and dominance last year. He is a better quarterback now, but he needs to do a little more to repeat as Heisman winner. Two big games against two solid opponents away from The Swamp, should do the trick.

Michael Crabtree
WR, Texas Tech

Last Week: a season-low six catches and 62 yards in Texas Tech’s 65-21 loss to No. 3 Oklahoma.
Next Week: Nov. 29 vs. Baylor.
His Chances: Everyone on Texas Tech took a hit after the team’s poor performance in Norman, Okla. This was Crabtree’s first game this season without a touchdown reception. His disappearance did not help the struggling Red Raiders’ offense against the Sooners.

Colt McCoy

Colt McCoy
QB, Texas

Last week: no game last weekend before the Thanksgiving clash with rival Texas A&M.
This week: Nov. 27 vs. Texas A&M.
His chances: Seems like a long time ago since he was the Heisman favorite after three strong games. Has not wowed anyone since then, but still has Texas in position for a national championship appearance. He needs one more big game to secure the trophy.

Shonn Greene
RB Iowa
Last week:
finished a fantastic season with a fantastic performance in a 55-0 romp over Minnesota. He ran the ball 22 times for 144 yards and two touchdowns.
Next week: season over.
His chances: Greene has been one of the top backs in the Big Ten all season, but has lacked a premier game to overlook Iowa’s 8-4 record. He had a good game against conference champion Penn State and he has racked up yards all season. Some think he is the best back in the country.

Keep an Eye On:

Percy Harvin, WR Florida: did not need to do much in Florida’s win over The Citadel. Rushed three times for 49 yards and a touchdown.

Graham Harrell, QB, Texas Tech: Did not have his best game in a loss to No. 3 Oklahoma. He threw for 361 yards, three touchdowns in a pick. But was rendered ineffective by the Sooners’ defense. Oklahoma’s defense embarrassed Texas Tech’s passing attack and proved that Harrell is more a product of the system rather than a true Heisman candidate.

Knowshown Moreno, RB Georgia: Has lost all his buzz, but he is still a solid back for a decent team. Has one game left to show why everyone thought he was the Heisman favorite at the beginning of the year.
