Wildcats can’t buck the trend: Ohio State 45, NU 10
Monday, November 10th, 2008With less than a minute remaining in the third quarter, Ohio State faced a second-and-goal at the Northwestern 6-yard line. Buckeyes freshman quarterback Terrelle Pryor took the shotgun snap and rolled out toward the right as he was chased from behind.
Nearing the sideline, it looked like Pryor would either run out of bounds or be corralled by the Wildcats for a loss. Instead, the dual-threat sensation shrugged off an intended sack, sidestepped an ankle tackle and juked past a diving defender, all while looking downfield. Pryor threw across his body and found senior tight end Rory Nicol in the back of the end zone for a touchdown.
As easily as Pryor shook the intended tackles, Ohio State shook NU’s hopes of an upset, topping the Cats 45-10.
Rossman-Reich: Conservative play-calling causes Cats to stumble
Monday, November 10th, 2008Ohio State faced a third-and-8 at its own 32-yard line near the end of the third quarter. Northwestern brought the blitz on quarterback Terrelle Pryor, but the freshman escaped the rush, broke a tackle and ran for the line of scrimmage.
Known for his running ability, Pryor likely could have gotten close to a first down with his legs. But that is not what he did.
Pocket Protectors
Friday, November 7th, 2008Imagine that one day, you wake up at 5:30 a.m. and scarf down a bagel. Later in the morning, you grab an early lunch. Then you eat again at 2 p.m. And at 5. And at 7.
And at 10. One of those meals is a hearty dinner, complete with a lot of meat and pasta.
You probably couldn’t eat close to all the food on your plate. And if you could, you most likely wouldn’t be able to move, much less play football.
But you aren’t an offensive lineman.
Preview: Managing third down spots
Friday, November 7th, 2008Northwestern fans love the sound of Dave Eanet’s “third down, eight to go” call over the airwaves. But if were up to the fans and the offense, that call would not be heard as frequently.
Coach Pat Fitzgerald knows how difficult it is to beat the running three-time conference champion. After all, the Buckeyes have beaten the Cats by a combined score of 112-17 the last two seasons.
“It’s embarrassing,” Fitzgerald said. “They’ve taken us behind the woodshed a couple years in a row and put a licking on us.”
From recruited hurlers to sideline weapons
Friday, November 7th, 2008Three weeks ago against Purdue, offensive coordinator Mick McCall sent in his play call to senior quarterback C.J. Bachér. Bachér got behind center and recited the play at the line of scrimmage.
He made his pre-snap reads and knew right away. This play could be dangerous.
Moments later, redshirt freshman wide receiver Sidney Stewart streaked across the middle of the field and caught a spiral behind the Boilermakers’ secondary for a touchdown.
But Bachér wasn’t on the other end of the pass. Senior wide receiver Eric Peterman was on a double wide receiver reverse pass.
Buckeyes’ Laurinaitis gets Animal instinct from father
Friday, November 7th, 2008James Laurinaitis is considered by many Big Ten quarterbacks to be the scariest player in the conference.
But he’s got nothing on his old man.
Big Ten Preview: Michigan adjusting to spoiler role
Friday, November 7th, 2008MICHIGAN (2-7, 1-4) at MINNESOTA (7-2, 3-2)
Time: 11 a.m.
Place: Minneapolis
Line: Gophers by 7.5
TV: ESPN
What’s at stake: Minnesota doesn’t beat Michigan very often, so the Golden Gophers should relish the victory they’ll achieve against the Wolverines on Saturday. Michigan head coach Rich Rodriguez is running out of ways to say “we saw some positives” after every loss, and he might want to start rehearsing his post-game speech before this contest.
Q&A: Keegan Kennedy
Friday, November 7th, 2008The DAILY’s Matt Forman spoke with the senior offensive guard.
Daily Sports: Being from Jupiter, Fla., what was your first Evanston winter like?
Keegan Kennedy: It was one of the worst experiences of my life. Freezing cold. The wind would cut right through me on the way to class. But I did have my football buddies to rely on. I bought a coat and some boots and I made it through.
National Preview: Saban returns to Death Valley
Friday, November 7th, 2008#1 ALABAMA (9-0) AT #15 LSU (6-2)
Saturday, Nov. 8, 2:30 p.m. CT, CBS
Line: LSU by 3.5
With Texas’ loss last week, Alabama climbed into the top position in both the BCS standings and the Associated Press poll. Of course, the No. 1 spot is a dangerous place to be these days, and to make things even more difficult, the Crimson Tide have to head into the Bayou to defend their position against the 15th-ranked Tigers. To add even more drama, Alabama coach Nick Saban is visiting Death Valley for the first time since he left LSU to coach the Miami Dolphins after the 2004 season.
Gentilviso: Longing for Thursday night football
Friday, November 7th, 2008It’s been a rough week of classes. You’re staring at that clock, watching the second hand, waiting for it to reach Thursday night.
As you plan your evening, going out is a no-brainer. And what better way to get ready for that experience than a trip to Ryan Field to watch Wildcats football?
